Open TRICARE For Life Handbook to Learn How Medicare, TRICARE Work Together

By TRICARE Communications

Will you be turning age 65 soon? Or are you already eligible for Medicare? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you should check out the TRICARE For Life Handbook. This resource may come in handy when you become eligible for Medicare.

Here’s a look at the top three things this handbook will help you understand.

1. Learn how TFL works
Did you know that TRICARE For Life (TFL) coverage is automatic if you have both Medicare Part A and Part B? Medicare and TRICARE For Life work together to coordinate benefits and reduce your out-of-pocket costs. Want to know how much of your care is covered and who pays what? Refer to the out-of-pocket costs table on page 9 of the handbook.

2. Read about your provider options
As stated in the handbook, “You have the freedom to seek care from any Medicare participating or Medicare nonparticipating provider, or military hospital or clinic if space is available.” Seeing certain providers, like Medicare participating providers, can save you money. On the other hand, seeing providers, like opt-out providers, can increase the amount you pay. The handbook can help you learn about the types of providers and potentially avoid unnecessary out-of-pocket expenses. When you’re ready to find a provider, check out the “Getting Care” section of the handbook.

3. Find answers to your Medicare and TFL questions
Do you know when and how to sign up for Medicare? Do you want to know how Medicare Part C and Part D work and if you need them? Whether you’re looking to learn the ins and outs of your Medicare options, or you want to know more about the coordination between Medicare and TRICARE coverage, the handbook can help.

“The great thing about this resource is that it has dedicated FAQs sections to help you better understand how your Medicare and TRICARE benefits work together,” said Robert Agnello, deputy director of Digital Communications, TRICARE Web and Publications, at the Defense Health Agency. “If you’re new to TFL or just need a quick refresher, these FAQs can be an easy way to learn about costs, what’s covered, and much more.”

The TRICARE For Life Handbook is a convenient resource to help you get the most out of your coverage. After you’ve read it, don’t forget to take the Publications Satisfaction Survey and share your thoughts. Doing so will help us improve your TRICARE handbooks and other publications.
