MHS GENESIS Deploying in Guam

By U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Allon Lapaix

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam – Military Health System GENESIS deployed here, Jan. 13th, 2023.

MHS GENESIS is the Military Health System’s advanced electronic health record that replaced several legacy systems. This system provides greater interoperability of patient information across all military hospitals, clinics and Veteran Affairs.

“Utilizing the MHS GENESIS allows our medical team to keep track of all our patients in a more efficient manner,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Derek Clinger, 36th Medical Group MHS GENESIS project lead. “It keeps all the information that we have and stores it all in one place, while giving the patients a platform to be able to check their status in real time.”

Now that MHS GENESIS released on Andersen, some of the benefits provided will allow patients to search for almost anything about their health more efficiently. It also has business tools allowing hospitals and clinics to accurately collect patient information at the start of a visit and better management of chronic, complex, and time-sensitive health conditions.

MHS GENESIS will provide 9.6 million beneficiaries and 205,000 medical providers around the world with a single, integrated health record across the continuum of care.

Since initial deployment in February 2017 at four sites in the Pacific Northwest, MHS GENESIS has undergone multiple upgrades, stabilization and adoption changes, and thousands of configuration changes. With Andersen Air Force Base being a part of the last wave to have the MHS GENESIS go online, members at Andersen now have access to the same information and systems that are being utilized by other bases around the world.

“The MHS GENESIS going live on Andersen solidifies the entire project,” said Clinger. “I feel like now we can be more up to speed and updated on information with other bases like Travis and the Pentagon.”

Military Honors Mothers, Infants by Supporting Breastfeeding

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found that 60 percent of mothers in the U.S. stop breast feeding sooner than planned, and that only one out of four infants are exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life, the medically recommended duration. The DOD and service military policies have been created and updated to ensure military mothers have the time, resources, and leadership support to breastfeed for six months after birth.
