BETHESDA, Md. (Nov. 21, 2024) Naval Medical Research Command (NMRC)’s Clinical Trials Center (CTC) is seeking volunteers to participate in a phase 1 clinical trial for a vaccine aimed at reducing frequency and severity of infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, a leading cause of skin and soft tissue infections. NMRC CTC is located at Naval Support Activity Bethesda, Building 17B (2nd floor), and can be contacted at 301-295-4735 (call) or 301-233-9640 (text), or via e-mail at usn.nmrc.ctc@health.mil to schedule an appointment. NMRC is engaged in a broad spectrum of activity from basic science in the laboratory to field studies in austere and remote areas of the world to investigations in operational environments. DHA Public Health Launches MilTICK SURE Path: Surveillance for Understudied, Rare Emerging Pathogens

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — The MilTICK program is expanding its disease surveillance to include deadly emerging pathogens. MilTICK SURE Path is a critical tool for defense public health entomology and public health officials in tracking emerging disease threats.

Vector-borne diseases, or VBDs, pose a risk to U.S. service members during military training exercises, operations, response missions, and deployments outside the continental U.S. Malaria and dengue fever, the VBDs most commonly experienced by the military in the last 12 years, are transmitted by mosquitoes. Service members, family members, and Department of Defense civilians should follow the three “Ds” of mosquito protection: Drain, Dress and Defend. Preserving Sight to Fight by Ensuring Effective Military Eye Protection

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Despite the continued development of munitions that create new types of blast fragments that can injure eyes, evidence indicates decreasing rates of eye injuries in the military.

Womack Army Medical Center celebrated the 2024 graduates during the Graduate Medical Education Commencement Ceremony, June 12, Iron Mike Conference Center, Fort Liberty MG. (Ret) Jeffrey Clark, Defense Health Agency Senior Leader Mentor delivered a heartfelt keynote speech. Clark shared stories from his 35-year career in the Army, emphasizing the importance of teamwork, leadership, and service. He encouraged the graduates to embrace their roles as military medical professionals, to cherish the joy of serving something bigger than themselves, and to support one another through the ups and downs of their journey. The graduates completed their training through the different residencies and internship programs at Womack, to include: Family Medicine Residency Program; Gynecologic Surgery and Obstetrics Residency Program; Internal Medicine Residency Program; Family Medicine Hospitalist Fellowship; U.S. Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing; Social Work Internship Program; Primary Care Eye Residency; Vision Rehabilitation Optometry Residency and U.S. Army Baylor University Graduate Program in Health and Business Administration.

Military Graduate Medical Education Applications Open Until Aug. 31

Aker, MHS Communications — Womack Army Medical Center celebrated the 2024 graduates during the Graduate Medical Education Commencement Ceremony, June 12, Iron Mike Conference Center, Fort Liberty, North Carolina. The Defense Health Agency GME program is open to applicants from now until Aug. 31, 2024. A new tool allows applicants to make better-informed decisions about their medical future and has all they need to learn about GME eligibility criteria and locations in one place.

Brown was transported to the NMCCL Trauma Center from North Topsail Beach on June 23 after suffering extensive wounds to his right leg from a shark bite. Brown was cared for by a team of providers at NMCCL; he will soon travel home to West Virginia to complete recovery.

Boy Bitten by Shark Thanks Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune for Care

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — On June 23, 14-year-old Blayne Brown was transported to Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune after suffering extensive wounds to his right leg from a shark bite. Brown thanked the cadre of physicians, corpsmen, nurses, and a physical therapist who have cared for him during his stay.

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center hosted its annual Safety Day celebration, Jun. 18 to promote summer safety awareness among staff. The event featured safety experts from various departments providing guidance on preventing injuries from heat, outdoor activities, water recreation, lawn care, and more.
