Coast Guard Retirees Now Can Pay TRICARE Enrollment Fees by Allotment

By TRICARE Communications

Group A retirees now pay enrollment fees to maintain their TRICARE Select or TRICARE Overseas Program Select coverage. If you’re a U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Public Health Service, or National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) retiree, you can now pay your enrollment fees by allotment. This will allow you to have your enrollment fees deducted automatically from your military retirement pay. To set up your payment process, you must contact your TRICARE contractor.

Set Up Allotment for TRICARE Select Enrollment Fees
Last year, retirees and their family members enrolled in TRICARE Select were required to set up payment for enrollment fees to keep their coverage this year. Up until now, the Direct Access Pay System wasn’t able to pay monthly TRICARE fees directly from retired pay. This means that if you were a U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Public Health Service, or NOAA retiree, you should have set up payment last year by electronic funds transfer from a U.S. bank account, credit card, or debit card for the month of January. Today, those receiving their retired pay from the Coast Guard Pay and Personnel Center can also set up an allotment.

You can’t set up your allotment through the Coast Guard Pay and Personnel Center. You need to contact your TRICARE contractor to set up your allotment.
TRICARE recommends you pay your enrollment fees by monthly allotment, when feasible. If you have an individual plan, you’ll pay $12.50 per month, or $150 annually. Enrollment fees for those with families will be $25 per month, or $300 annually. To check other costs, you can refer to the TRICARE Costs and Fees Sheet or go to TRICARE Costs.

Reinstate TRICARE Select Coverage and Pay Enrollment Fees
If you didn’t set up your enrollment fees last year, you were disenrolled from your TRICARE Select plan effective Dec. 31, 2020. You must now request reinstatement with your TRICARE contractor if you want to remain enrolled in TRICARE Select coverage. You have until June 30, 2021 to make your request. For options on how you can reinstate your coverage, go to your TRICARE contractor’s website:
Once you request reinstatement, your TRICARE Select coverage will be reinstated back to Jan. 1, 2021. This means you’ll also have to pay enrollment fees back to that date. If you can’t or choose not to pay by allotment, you can set up your recurring payments using your bank account or a debit/credit card. Without coverage, you can only get care from a military hospital or clinic if space is available. This means that you’ll be responsible for covering all of your civilian health care costs.

Take action now to set up your payment process. To learn more, visit TRICARE Select Enrollment Fees. If you have questions, be sure to reach out to your TRICARE contractor.
