FALLS CHURCH, Va. –
In our increasingly digital world, health care is evolving, and your dental care is no exception. Teledentistry offers a convenient and accessible way to receive dental care from the comfort of your own home. But what exactly is teledentistry, and what does it mean for you as a TRICARE Dental Program enrollee? Let's demystify teledentistry and clarify what’s covered under the TDP.
What is teledentistry?
Teledentistry is dental care provided virtually. Instead of a traditional in-person visit, you might connect with your dentist through video calls, secure messaging, or by sending images and information about your dental concerns.
To get the most out of a teledentistry visit, a dentist will provide directions on how you can assist the exam by positioning the camera or using a mirror to help see inside your mouth.
Why might someone choose a teledentistry appointment?
- Convenience and accessibility. Patients can consult with a dentist from the comfort of their home or office, eliminating travel time, parking hassles, and the need to take time off work or arrange childcare. This is particularly beneficial for individuals in rural areas with limited access to dental professionals or those with mobility issues.
- Reduced anxiety. For patients with dental anxiety, a virtual appointment in a familiar environment can be less intimidating than a traditional office visit.
TDP coverage
As a TDP enrollee, you’re eligible to receive one teledentistry evaluation within a consecutive 12-month period. Remember, the TDP allows two routine examinations per year.
